We live in a
world of gains and goal, new year’s resolutions and the pursuit of more. While I
am not saying we shouldn’t be striving for more in some areas of our lives, you
will usually see more bang for your buck in what you lose, than what you gain.
Think of it
like this, we are born into the world and as long as there are no issues with the
birth, we pretty much have a clean slate. As time goes by we pick up habits,
some good, and some bad. By the time we leave school we have so many habits
stacked on top of one another that we generally do not know our true self, from
our conditioned self.
By the time
we are deep into adulthood, we have been pushed, pulled and guided in a million directions, which can often lead to a
huge sense of overwhelm. Then every New Year we try and add another 5 habits to
the million we already have.
In this
article I am trying another approach, the opposite to resolution, what I would
like to call a reso¬lose-ions were we focus on losing habits that are unhealthy
and sabotaging our growth, instead of gaining new ones!
Below are 7
things you need to lose to make 2016 you best year ever
Constant
Noise
We are
currently living in the most overstimulated and connected time in history,
which can lead to the perpetual cycle of needing constant noise. This can come
in the form of the TV, your digital devices, the radio in your car or just the
constant need to be talking to someone
You can
really learn a lot about yourself if you take a little time to be silent, so
try taking just 5 minutes a day to
practice being present while focusing on your breathing!
Constant
Contact
Time alone
is good, the problem is a lot of people mistake being alone with being lonely,
when they are 2 completely different things. You can spend a lot of time with
people and still be lonely, in the same way you can spend a lot of time alone
and be content!
As human
beings we crave completeness, the perfect balance of light, dark, masculine and
feminine. If we cannot find this completeness within ourselves, we will seek it
outside.
This is why
so many people crave constant contact, we need to validate who we are, validate
our choices and make sure there are others who agree with us. It is good to
connect, but the only way to really get to know who you are is to spend time
alone and find that completeness.
Control
You are the
captain of your ship, your job is to steer and guide, there is a lot you can do
to make sure your ship doesn’t sink, but occasionally you are going to hit some
stormy weather.
There are
many things in your life that you will not be able to control, this is okay, embrace
the ride and just accept the good, the bad and everything in between!
If you want
to take control- take control of your choices, your opinions and your actions. If
you want a complete lack of control try to control the choices, opinions and
actions of others.
The first
option is empowering, the second disempowering! If you want true empowerment
for 2016 give up on controlling the uncontrollable!
Illusion of Knowledge
Socrates said: “The only
true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.” as human beings we have very few certainties, the grass may look
green to me, but if a dog looks at that grass it is no longer green and who is to say that my
perception of green is the same as your
perception of green?
If you have an
overwhelming need to be right all the time you will learn very little. If you
cannot find the teacher/student balance inside you, then you will only have the
illusion of being knowledgeable. If you think you know something but someone
has a different opinion, don’t be too quick to dismiss it, as you may just miss
a valuable lesson. Keep your mind open as there is always a something to take
from every situation, but who knows maybe I am wrong about this! :-)
Constant Negativity
Constantly looking at
things in a negative light is a bad habit and while negativity is part of the
yin and yang balance of life, chronic negativity is very much destructive.
Life is like a game of
Monopoly, you can embrace the struggle, accept that sometimes you will get unlucky, keep a good attitude
and know that you can always start from the
beginning should you lose. Or you can throw the Monopoly board across
the room because you got sent to jail 5 minutes into the game.
Darker emotions are not
necessarily negative, what is negative is when you take those dark emotions and
use them as a reason to be destructive. We are all human and will slip up
sometimes, but if you find yourself stuck in the perpetual cycle of negative
energy, you have to do something to raise those vibes!
Constant Positivity
Yes I did say “Constant
Positivity” if you do not embrace all states of mind you will end up imbalanced.
This is where true maturity happens, when you can take the darker aspects of
life, reflect upon them and still maintain a good attitude.
Masking the bad things
that have happened in your life with affirmations, good thoughts and
visualisation is only a band aid to the problem. Unless you have spent your
entire life under a rock, chances are you have suffered quite a bit, if you
truly want to heal you need to accept what has happened in your life and not
mask it.
As I said earlier, full
balance is light, dark, masculine and feminine. Different people embrace
different parts in different ways, but if you want to truly grow you need to
embrace the full package!
Your Masks
We all have masks, this
is what we hide behind when we don’t want to be ourselves. To fully embrace what
it means to be your own unique version of yourself, you need to drop this mask.
Embrace what it is you love, spend your time with those who make you feel good and
live your life to the limit every single day.
